Abstract

819,506. Work-holders. WILTON TOOL MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. Jan. 11, 1957, No. 1193/57. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A quick-adjustment screw clamping device adapted to be secured to work surfaces or machine tables by an apertured base 60, comprises a work-engaging member 67 carried by a screw 50 which extends through a housing 61 and through a nut 35 which is transversely movable and rotatable in the housing, the nut having a passage larger in diameter than the screw and with threads at one side only and a pair of outer cam faces adapted to engage a wall portion of the housing on rotation of the nut. The nut is radially apertured to receive a spring-pressed friction shoe 39 which engages the screw 50, so that, on rotating the screw 50 in the tightening direction, the shoe rocks the nut and one of the cam faces thereon moves it laterally to engage its threads with the screw. Further rotation of the screw then tightens the clamp. Rotation of the screw in the reverse direction similarly causes the other cam face on the nut to move it laterally to disengage the threads and allow the screw to be moved axially through the nut.
