In coking ovens of the kind comprising tapered horizontal coking chambers 2, 3 heated by hot gases passing through vertical flues 6 disposed between the walls 12 of the chambers, the flues are formed by equally spaced bottle bricks 8 ... 10, the thickness of which increase progressively from the end 20 of the oven to the end 19. Thus, the areas of the flues diminish progressively from the end 20 to the end 19 to secure uniform heating of the chambers throughout their length.
