Abstract

<PICT:0819251/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0819251/IV (c)/2> <PICT:0819251/IV (c)/3> A garment dyeing machine in which liquid is passed through a rotary work container 5 either as a continuous recirculation of a selected volume of liquid or as a continuous flow of fresh liquid which passes once only through the container and thence to a drain, is characterized in that one or each end of the container 5 is divided into angularly spaced compartments 28, which have no communication with the actual work chamber 26, or chambers, otherwise than externally of the periphery of the container, the liquid contents of a stationary casing 6 around the container having entry to the compartments 28 through the work chamber 26 or chambers, and the compartments 28, as the container rotates, successively lifting quantities of liquid and eventually discharging them into a stationary collector 42 provided in or on the adjacent end wall 6a of the casing. The chamber 26 is separated from the compartment 28 by a diaphragm 25, these compartments being separated from a central cavity 29 by substantially chordal partitions 27. Each of the compartments 28 has a liquid inlet duct 35 by means of which it is connected to a longitudinal slot or perforated area 34 of the peripheral wall of the chamber 26. Each compartment 28 is also provided with two liquid outlets 38 located within pockets 37. As each pocket 37 reaches its highest position during rotation of the container 5 a discharge pipe 39 connected with the outlet 38 moves past an arcuate slot 41 in the end wall 6a and liquid is discharged into the collector 42. Any liquid escaping between the pipes 39 and the stationary slot 41 returns to the casing 6 to be picked up and discharged later. As the container 5 rotates, liquid in the casing 6 is directed into the work-chamber 26 through longitudinal slots 31 provided with double-sided scoops 32 and perforated lifters 33. The liquid collector 42 is provided with glazed observation openings and an outlet port (Fig. 4, not shown) connected to either a drain or recirculating means. The container 5 is mounted on a solid trunnion 7 journalled in bearings 8 located in the hubportion 9 of a spider 10 whose arms are bolted to the end wall 6a of the casing 6. An extension 12 of the spider 10 carries a lay shaft 13 connected to the trunnion 7 by enclosed reduction gearing 14, 15. The lay shaft 13 carries a pulley 16 driven through V-ropes 17 or a belt from the pulley 18 of an electric motor 19 mounted on a bracket 20 on the end wall 6a. In a modification the liquid collector 42 may be in the form of an open through arranged internally of the casing 6. Specifications 688,076 and 765,358 are referred to.
