Abstract

<PICT:0412020/IV/1> A machine for dyeing &c., of the kind in which the goods are subjected to a constantly reversing direction of flow of liquor, comprises a chamber divided horizontally by a perforated floor, concentric flow and return pipes connected to the bottom of the chamber below said floor, a double-spout member over the mouths of said pipes to expose different parts of the floor at different times to an upward flow of liquid, means producing relative rotation between the floor and the spout member, and means to circulate liquor through the pipes and chamber. As shown, the spout member s is provided with a V-shaped gap s<1> through which liquor, forced up the inner pipe g by a propeller m, is discharged into the chamber a below the stationary floor b. The hood is arcuate in shape and has an arcuate open-ended channel s<2> through which some liquor returns into the outer pipe h and is recirculated by the propeller. The spout is rotated by a shaft r so that the direction of flow of liquor at a given part of the floor is constantly changing. Vanes t fixed to the spout extend to the chamber wall. One or more impulse pumps, e.g. comprising a cylinder having an open end uppermost and a piston moved slowly downward and quickly, by a compressed spring, upward, may be placed below the floor or cage. A different form of rotating spout is described, which covers the whole of the openings of the pipes and from which two spouts project in diametrically opposite directions. A perforated cage may be provided in place of the perforated floor. The direction of rotation of the propeller may be changed periodically. The screw propeller may be positioned in the pipe h and may be replaced by a rotary or reciprocating pump.
