Abstract

819,151. Change-speed gearing. MAQUINAS AGRICOLAS ROMA S.A. Jan. 24, 1957 [Jan. 25, 1956], No. 2635/57. Class 80 (2). In a change-speed gear in which a first gear is arranged to selectively engage any one of a set of stepped gears by movements parallel and transverse to the common axis, the movements of the first gear are controlled by a single manually-operable means. A Norton-type change-speed gear in which a driving shaft 55 has an axially slidable gear 54 keyed thereto and carried in a supporting member 49 slidable on, and rotatable about the shaft 55. The supporting member 49 also carries a second gear 52 permanently engaged with the gear 54 and selectively engageable with a series of stepped gears 53. The supporting member 49 is controlled by a hand lever 4 having angular movements 27, 28 transverse to the shaft 55 and also parallel to the shaft 55 about the axis of a control shaft 1. Initial movement of the lever 4 in direction 27 moves a cam 29 in a direction 30 along the control shaft 1 through movement of a fork 21 connected to the lever 4. Movement of the cam 29 causes a follower 44 to ride up a truncated conical face 46<SP>1</SP> and rotate a locking control lever 37 to contact the free end of an engaging member 64 and withdraw a catch means 60 from a locking recess 61 against the action of a spring 80, to unlock the supporting member 49. Further movement of the cam 29 in direction 30 allows the cam end face 46 to contact an abutment 45 on a lever 40, pivoted at 41, to cause the end 47 of the lever to contact the underside of the supporting member 49 and rotate that member about the shaft 55, against a spring 68, to unmesh the gears 52, 53. Angular movement of the lever 4 about the axis of the control shaft 1 swings a first control member 35, rigid with the shaft 1, and having portions 50, 51 located on either side of the supporting member 49, to move the member 49 axially along the shaft 55 for gear selection. The levers 37 and 40 are pivoted at 38 and 41 respectively on the member 35 and move with it. Movement of the lever 4 in direction 28 first allows engagement of the gear 52 with the selected gear 53 and then releases the catch means 60 to lock the supporting member in position. A chart, co-operating with pointers on the control member 5, is fixed to the casing 10 to indicate the ratio obtained.
