818,858. Joint-making packing. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Dec. 30, 1957 [Jan. 2, 1957], No. 40264/57. Class 122 (3). A sealing means between the joint-faces of two separable parts 10, 12, Fig. 1, constituting a propeller hub comprises a seal 20 which encircles the shank 16 of the propeller blade and is seated in a groove 24 formed in the parts 10, 12, and an elongated sealing strip 28 positioned between the joint-faces and having an end portion in sealing engagement with a hole 30 formed in the seal 20. As shown in Fig. 1, applied to a three-bladed propeller hub, the sealing strip 28, which may be of resilient material such as rubber, is located in half-round grooves 26 formed in the joint-faces of the hub parts 10, 12, and has each end received in a hole 30 provided in the outer surfaces of adjacent seals 20 which surround the shanks 16 of the propeller blades. When the hub bolts 14 are tightened, the seal 20, which may be an endless ring of resilient material such as synthetic rubber, is compressed to thereby contract the hole and thus make sealing contact between the strip 28 and the seal 20. The latter seal is prevented from relative movement with the hub parts 10, 12 by a split spring-steel ring 27, Fig. 7, having lugs engaging with corresponding slots in the seal, and pins 31 located in recesses 33 formed in the hub.
