Abstract

Metal surfaces are protected by one or more coats of an aqueous suspension of hydraulic cement containing zinc chromate and polyvinyl acetate followed by one or more bituminous or resinous coats. The cementitious suspension may include gelling agents such as bentonite and wetting agents such as dehydrated soap and may be applied by brushing, spraying or trowelling. The other coating material may be a solution of bitumen in a solvent such as white spirit, which may contain asphaltum or a modified phenol-formaldehyde resin, or a solution of a drying oil and a rosin-modified phenolic resin in white spirit, and may also contain a small amount of cement.
