Abstract

818,159. Forced-flow steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 8, 1956 [May 9, 1955], No. 14228/56. Class 123(2) In a forced-flow, once-through steam generator which may operate at supercritical pressure, a feed pump 7 supplies water to an economizer 6 whence it flows serially through radiantly heated furnace tubes 1, wall tubes 3 of a convection pass and a heating tube section 5 disposed in the pass wherein it is brought to a point at which it has received the major portion of the heat required to effect vaporization. From the section 5 steam-water mixture flows into a direct contact heat exchanger 10, disposed outside of the heating gas flow path, in which it is mixed with sufficient superheated steam to complete vaporization and produce a limited degree of superheat. The steam, containing suspended solids in a form in which they can be carried through the remainder of the tube system without deposition, flows from the exchanger 10 through primary and secondary superheaters 4, 2, to the final outlet header 13. Superheated steam entering the heat exchanger 10 is withdrawn between the superheating stages by a pump 12 which delivers it to the heat exchanger.
