Abstract

817,999. Winches; depth indicators. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. May 3,1957 [May 18, 1956]. No. 15502/56. Classes 78 (2) and 78 (5). Winch pulley 1 is driven by a motor shaft 39 through gearing 41, 40, 37, 38, and in turn drives its own eddycurrent brake through gearing 48, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57. The winch cable 2, which carries an atomic reactor control rod, passes over pulley 3, the latter driving magslip 8 through the gearing shown so as to indicate the revolutions of the pulley 3 and therefore the position of the control rod, the cable being pressed on the pulley 3 by spring- urged rollers 4, 5. When the control rod reaches to bottom, the cable slackens and this is detected by pulley 22 carried by arm 24 pivoting at 25, the movement of the pulley operating switch 68 to cut-out the motor. The cable is secured to the pulley 1 by means of spring arm 75 pivoting at 77. In detaching the cable, the ferrule 74 of the cable is freed from said spring arm and is pulled through a channel 81 formed in the drum, the drum having first been made non-rotatable by pin 87 and the puiley 3 havlng been similarly secured by the pin 88.
