Abstract
817,872. Reciprocating pumps. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 24, 1957 [June 9, 1956], No. 17893/56. Class 102(1). A reciprocating pump comprises a tank 3 to which liquid is supplied through an 4, the level of liquid in the tank being maintained at a constant level by an overflow pipe 6. A cylinder 1 having a blind end 1a below the liquid level, and an open end above this level is provided with ports 7 for gravity liquid flow from the tank to the cylinder. A leaky plunger 8, being a loose fit in the cylinder is provided with a central bore 9 and axial ports 10 and is connected by a rod 18 to an air motor (not shown). In operation the plunger rises above the ports 7 and liquid flows into the cylinder 1, and on its downward stroke liquid is discharged through bore 9, passages 10 to the outlet 17 situated above the liquid level in the tank. A baffle 14 is provided on the plunger to prevent splashing of the liquid and a conduit 15 provides a pressure relief passage from the chamber 11. The stroke of the plunger may be varied to regulate the volume of delivery. In a modified form the bore 9 may be omitted and the discharge of the liquid takes place through a radial port at the bottom of the cylinder and an axial passage parallel to the cylinder extending to the outlet. Several pumps may be gauged together and operated through an air system to pump different liquids.
