Abstract

A ceramic or cermet body is coated with a ternary alloy of substantially 1-10 per cent Ti, 1-30 per cent Sn, 60-98 per cent Cu. The coating will also serve to bond to the ceramic or cermet (e.g. almumina, steatite, zircon), a metal member (e.g. steel, Cu) of similar thermal expansion. The coating material is applied to the ceramic surface as a thin layer of homogeneous alloy in solid or powder form or a mixture of the powdered metals, and fixed at 850 DEG -1150 DEG C. in a dry oxygen-free atmosphere. If desired a Ni, Cu or Cd coat may then be applied and the thus coated ceramic be brazed by conventional methods (e.g. using Ag brazing powder) to a metal member.
