Abstract

Substantially water-insoluble diazonium compounds are prepared by mixing a water-soluble diazonium compound with a finely divided water-insoluble particulate substance carrying groups capable of cation exchange. Specified particulate substances are synthetic resins such as sulphonated phenolic, polycarboxylic, sulphonated polystyrene and polymethacrylic resins and synthetic or naturally occurring aluminium silicates, such as hydrogen aluminium silicate. In examples an aqueous solution of N : N - diethylamino - benzene - p - diazonium chloride (as the zinc chloride double salt) or diphenylamino-4-diazonium acid sulphate and citric acid is mixed with a slurry of "Wilkinite" (a natural clay) or with a powdered sulphonated polystyrene resin, the mixture is filtered, the cake is washed with aqueous citric acid and water and then either dried over potassium hydroxide and ground or made into an aqueous suspension. Analysis of the products shows that the particulate substances absorb the diazonium compound. The borofluoride of the diazonium base may be used instead of the zinc chloride double salt in the above process.
