Abstract

The caking tendency of potassium chloride or mixtures containing it is reduced by intimately admixing therewith a soluble ferrous or ferric cyanide especially those of the alkali metals in amounts generally below 0.1 per cent. by weight and suitably 0.05 to 0.001 per cent. by weight. The additive may be incorporated by dry mixing, by atomizing a dilute solution thereof on to the solid chloride or by adding the ferrous or ferric cyanide to a suspension of potassium chloride and thereafter separating the chloride from the mother liquor. According to examples (i) technical potassium chloride was treated in a mixing screw with a 4 per cent. solution of sodium ferrous cyanide atomized on to the flowing chloride after which the salt was dried. (ii) Potassium ferric cyanide was intimately mixed with potassium chloride and the mixture was spread over a large mass of the same potassium chloride and the whole intimately mixed.
