A pattern mechanism for independent needle knitting-machines includes a pattern drum 18 which is continuously driven at a uniform speed; a pattern strip 26 passing over the drum and bearing pattern indications 29 so disposed as to effect seriatim selection, in a wave, of a group of instrumentalities; and means (constituted by selectors 31) for reading and transmitting the dictates of the indications to the instrumentalities. To this end, slots 25 are helically disposed on the drum surface and the lines of pattern indications 29 are correspondingly disposed on the band. Those selectors 31, of which coacting ends, seriatims, find indications in the band, are slid axially, by continued rotation of the drum, to bring notches on their other ends into engagement with the blade 39 of a cam 37, thereby to actuate the corresponding needle, needle jack, sinker, presser, transfer instrument, or the like, either directly or through levers 35. A surface 41 on the cam 37 supplements the actions of selector return springs 33. The pattern indications are preferably rectangular perforations. The arrangement may be applied to, inter alia, stationary cylinder, cylinder and dial or superposed cylinder machines. At each patterning station is provided a unit consisting of two of the above described mechanisms and each of the pair of drums of each unit is driven through an idler gear by disengagement of which the pattern action may be arrested.
