A filling nozzle for topping up submarine batteries comprises a hollow body 10, a hollow handle 12 communicating with the interior of the body and with a hose pipe, a detachable nozzle part 19, a spindle 15 supported by a lower guide 13 and an upper guide 24, a closure member 16 secured to one end of the spindle to close the nozzle under the action of a spring 32 acting on the other end of the spindle, a lever pivoted at 35 for raising the spindle and opening the valve member against the spring 32 and a metal sealing bellows 27 for sealing the spindle and arranged to balance the effect of fluid pressure within the body acting on the closure member to tend to close it. The valve member 16 is secured to the spindle by means of a double pin 17 working freely in a circular groove on the spindle and permitting the closure member to rotate relative to the spindle to avoid any torsional loading on the bellows. The parts of the nozzle having external surfaces are moulded or fabricated from electrically insulating synthetic plastic material.
