Abstract

815,382. Friction clutches; reverse gearing. GOTAVERKEN A.B. April 20, 1956 [April 21, 1955], No. 12202/56. Class 80 (2). A fluid pressure operated friction clutch within a hollow gear wheel 3 comprises two discs 20, 21 slidden axially on a splined hub 22 to engage circular ribs and grooves of conical cross-section on their side faces with corresponding ribs and grooves on the inside walls of the gear-wheel when oil under pressure is admitted through a passage 38, the hub 22 forming part of a shaft 33 which is rotatably supported with respect to the gear by bearings 26, 27, the gear-wheel itself rotating within a surrounding casing 11 in bearings 14, 15. The arrangement is such that if the co-operating ribs and grooves on the discs 20, 21 and the side walls of the gear-wheel are not quite concentric, the shaft bearings 14, 15 are not affected. Further, engagement and disengagement of the clutch does not cause axial sliding movements of the bearings. In the form shown, the bearings 26, 27 are ball bearings, but alternatively they may be roller or plain bearings. The clutch is biased to the disengaged position by dished spring rings 23, and a spacer ring 39 maintains a limited degree of separation between the discs 20, 21 when the clutch is disengaged. In one modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the outer races of a pair of ball bearings supporting the shaft in the gear-wheel are mounted in annular recesses in the walls of the gear-wheel, and have their inner races mounted on shoulders on the shaft hub. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a single ball bearing supports the end of the shaft within an axially projecting sleeve fast with one wall of the gear. A forward-reverse gear, Fig. 1 (also not shown), is described in which an input shaft carries a gear-wheel meshing a large clutch gear-wheel according to the invention on a countershaft carrying a small gear-wheel meshing a gear-wheel on an output shaft, the clutch gear-wheel meshing a second clutch gear-wheel according to the invention on a second countershaft also carrying a gear-wheel meshing the gear-wheel fast on the output shaft. Specification 684,886 is referred to.
