Abstract

912,626. Variable-speed gear. GUICHARD, L. Nov. 23, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 39702/59. Class 80 (2). In a continuously-variable friction gear in which planetary balls 26 move between non- rotatable axially movable inner races 17, 19 and axially movable outer races 5, 7, the race 5 is connected to the input shaft 1 by a bellshaped member 3 while the race 7 is connected to the output shaft 2 through a friction clutch 8. As the speed of rotation increases the balls 26 move outwards and the races 17, 19 are drawn together by a spring 22 causing axial movement of a pair of sleeves 20, 21 interconnected by a screwed sleeve 20<SP>1</SP>. At the same time the race 7 moves to the left to engage the clutch plate 8 and both continue movement against a spring 14, the sleeve 13 of the clutch being connected to a sleeve 12 on the output shaft 2 by a second screwed sleeve 13<SP>1</SP>. When the balls 26 reach their outermost position the clutch 8 engages the wall 3<SP>1</SP> of member 3 to lock the gear for direct drive. The axial spacing of the races 17, 19 may be adjusted by a manual or servo-operated override lever 23.
