Abstract

<PICT:0814803/III/1> A process for the conversion of homogeneously cooling substances such as resins, pitches, waxes and tars, from the liquid into the solid condition with an elongated strand-like shape by means of a flowing liquid cooling medium comprises introduction of the liquid substance into the cooling medium through a heated discharge nozzle arranged below the surface of the cooling medium, the substance being surrounded and moved by a stream of the cooling medium until acquiring stability of shape. As shown the nozzle 3 is surrounded by a heated jacket 4. A cooling medium, e.g. water, is circulated by a pump 7 through a cooling tank 11 which may be spiral or sinuous in a vertical plane or straight and which may have constricted or expanded cross-section beyond the nozzle 3 to vary the speed of the cooling medium. The cooled substance is separated from the cooling medium at a screen 12 and may then be sprayed while on a conveyer 14. The cooling medium is collected in a tank 13 and filtered, part is then recirculated to the cooling tank through line 19 and part through cooler 8 and line 9. The cooling medium in the tank between lines 9 and 19 is thus relatively warm and sudden cooling of the substance on leaving nozzle 3 is avoided. The same effect is obtained by dispensing with line 9, placing the cooler 8 in line 19 and giving the heating jacket an open end next the orifice of nozzle 3. Discharged substance on issuing from nozzle 3 is then surrounded by a belt of warm cooling medium (Fig. 1, not shown). The nozzle may be movable axially along the cooling tank.
