A setting device for a screw-cutting tool comprises a support adapted to straddle the main guideways and carrying a slide adjustable at right angles to the guideways by a micrometer, the slide supporting a further slide which is adapted to contact the tool and operates a comparing device carried by the first slider. A stand 1, Fig. 4, is shaped at the base to fit on the main guideways of a lathe. The stand carries a member 4 which extends at right angles to the bed and is vertically adjustable in the stand by a screw device 20, 21. Guideways on the upper surface of the member 4 support a slide 5 for movement at right angles to the bed. The position of the slide is set by a two-position stop 25, Fig. 6, on the slide, and a micrometer 6 secured to the side of member 4. A member 13, Fig. 4, is guided for movement in the same direction, and on the upper side of slide 5. This member carries a stud 28 which, through a linkage, moves a dial-gauge 19 supported by the first slide 5. The tool is moved on its holder to bring the point into engagement with a notch 11, Fig. 6, in the slide member 13, which moves the dial-gauge until a predetermined indication gives the position for clamping the tool.
