Abstract
812,536. Pistons. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 11, 1957, No. 31894/57. Class 122 (1). A piston assembly 24, particularly for pumps used to force motten magnesium alloys into a die, comprises a bolt 28 having a head 29 and a shank 32 threaded at its end 34 to engage a plunger shaft 25, alternately arranged spacer rings 42, 44 and separator rings 38, 40 closely fitting the shank 32 and piston rings 46, 48 surrounding the spacer rings with clearance and having an outer diameter greater than that of the separator rings and a width less than. the spacer rings. The piston rings are split and the spacer ring 42 abuts a flange 30 integral..with the bolt 28. The piston, spacer and separator rings may be made of a cobalt-chromiumtungsten alloy, such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Stellite. " The bolt 28 may either be made of " Stellite " or only the face of the flange 30 facing the ring 42 and the cylindrical surface of the flange may be coated with " Stellite." Tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, chromium boride, tantalum carbide or molybdenum may be used instead of " Stellite." In the modification shown in Fig. 4, combined separator and spacer rings 30a, 40a are used.
