Abstract

The invention comprises dyestuffs of formula <FORM:0812102/IV (c)/1> where R is the residue of an o-phenol carboxylic acid bound in p-position to the hydroxyl group, X and Y are H or alkyl, and Z is an aryl residue containing a water-solubilizing group, and their copper complexes. They are made by coupling 1 mol. of an appropriate tetrazotized diphenyl with 1 mol. of a desired o-phenol carboxylic acid and subsequently with 1 mol. of an appropriate 2 - arylamino - 8 - naphthol - 6 - sulphonic acid. The metal free dyestuffs may be coppered in substance or on the fibre by conventional methods. Indicated as phenol carboxylic acids are salicylic acid and its alkyl, halo and sulpho derivatives. Specified naphthol sulphonic acids are 2-(31-sulpho-, -sulphamido- or -carboxy- or 41-chloro- and -methoxy - 31 - sulpho - phenyl)-, and -(61- or 71-sulpho- or 71-carboxy-naphthyl-[11]-)-amino-8-naphthol-6-sulphoni acid. The copper dyestuffs dye cotton and regenerated cellulose in brown shades. In examples illustrating the preparation of the dyestuffs and their use in dyeing processes the diphenyls used are 3-methoxy-, -ethoxy- and hydroxy- and 3-ethoxy - 31 - methyl - 4,41 - diaminodiphenyl, the phenol carboxylic acids are salicylic acid and 5 - methylphenol - 2 - carboxylic acid and the naphthol sulphonic acids are chosen from those specified above.
