Abstract
812,046. Stuffing-box substitutes. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON - HOUSTON. Dec. 18, 1957 [Dec. 21, 1956], No. 39373/57. Class 122 (5). A seal 2, Fig. 2, between a rotatable shaft A and its housing C comprising a pair of annular members 11, 12 mounted on the shaft and housing respectively and urged into contact with each other, has one of these members composed of a non-porous metal support having on its surface an open metallic structure which incorporates or is impregnated with a self-lubricating material. The open metallic structure may consist of a porous (e.g. sintered) metal coating of such metals as nickel, bronze, beryllium, N.S.M. 22 steel, aluminium, and impregnated with a self-lubricating material such as P.T.F.E. As shown in Fig. 2, the member 12, which is constructed as described above, is urged into contact with the member 11 by a bellows 13 attached to the housing C, the latter member, of a non-porous form of any of the above metals, being secured to the shaft. Several pairs of members 11, 12 may be used to form the seal 2. In modifications, both members 11, 12 may be urged together by separate bellows attached to the shaft and housing respectively, or as shown in Fig. 4, self-lubricating members 16, 16<SP>1</SP> are resiliently mounted at 13c in the housing C, one on each side of a non-porous metal plate 17 which is secured to the shaft A. The seal 2, when applied to a compressor as shown in Fig. 1, in contact with a corrosive atmosphere on the left-hand end of the shaft C and driven by a motor at the right-hand end of the shaft, is located between a pair of annular barriers 1, 3 attached to the housing C which serve to stabilize the pressure of a neutral gas fed from a supply 5 to the spaces between the barriers and the seal. A second oil lubricated contacttype seal 7 is also provided and a fan 6 is positioned between the two seals in order to circulate the gas so that a filter circuit 5 may separate any oil vapour. A third seal 9, also oil lubricated, is located on the outer side of a bearing 8, the lubricating oil being cooled by a heat-exchanger 4.
