Abstract

734,794. Stuffing-box substitutes. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Dec. 1, 1952 [Sept. 25, 1952], No. 30357/52. Class 122 (5). A sealing device for retaining lubricant in and excluding foreign, abrasive materials from a bearing comprises a pair of relatively moving seal elements having mutually contacting sealing faces of ceramic -material having a particle hardness exceeding 7. on the Moh scale of hardness. The bearing 16a of a track type tractor roller 10 is sealed by aside-face type seal comprising a stationary sealing-ring 31 supported by a rubber diaphragm 39 and urged, by a spring 33, into facial sealing contact with a rotatable sealing ring 32 secured to the roller hub 13 by means of a plate 35 and a rubber ring 36 bonded to both the plate 35 and the ring 32. The rings 31 and 32 are made of ceramic which has a particle hardness exceeding 7 on the Moh scale and a porosity, preferably not more than 15 per cent nor less than 3 per cent, such that seepage of bearing lubricant is permitted to the contact faces of the rings without appreciable loss of lubricant through the rings. The contact faces of the rings 31, 32 may be slightly tapered away from each other at their inner peripheral portions as at 40. Specification 665,696 is referred to.
