Abstract

811,525. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Aug. 7, 1957 [Aug. 7, 1956], No. 24200/56. Class 103 (1). A fluid pressure-operated spot disc brake comprises a disc 10 mounted between two friction pads 25, and two cylinders 19, 21, one associated with each pad in which fluid pressure acts to press the pads against the disc, the axis of the cylinders being offset by a distance less than the internal radius of the cylinders along the circumference of a circle about the centre of disc 10. A trough-shaped carrier 13, 18 secured at 14 to a non-rotating part 16, 17, has a cylinder formed in each wall, the cylinders 19, 21 having axes equidistant from and parallel to the disc axis, the axis of cylin.- der 19 being ahead of the axis of cylinder 21, the direction of normal rotation being as shown by arrow 22, Fig. 1. A piston 27, in each cylinder, has a, flat end wall against backing plate 24 secured to the friction pad 24, and a disc 29, held by spring ring 32, closes each cylinder and carries a tube 34 which projects into piston 27; in each of two diametrically opposite, part circumferential slots 38 in tube 34, is located a rigid metal bar 39, a spring 40 mounted in tube 34 on projections 41 of the bars forces their ends against the internal wall of the piston 27, the bars, being slightly narrower than the slots 38, are urged against the outer edges of the slots by a spring 42 surrounding tube 34 between its flange 37 and the bars 39. In operation, fluid supplied to cylinder 21 via conduit 44, the cylinders 19, 21 being connected by conduit 43, moves the pistons 27 relative to discs 29, the bars 39 moving with the pistons due to frictional contact until they contact the inner edges of slots 38, in further movement the pistons slide relative to bars 39 and on brake release, pistons 27 are retracted by springs 42 and move until the bars 39 engage the outer edges of slots 38, the wear of pads 25 then having been compensated for. The off setting of the cylinder axis is such as to produce a twisting force on carrier 13 sufficient to balance the twisting force due to drag, so reducing deflection of the carrier under load and so vibrations and noise are reduced. The offset may slightly differ from this critical value to produce a slight twisting force on the disc tending to take up slack in the wheel bearings during braking.
