Abstract

<PICT:0810922/IV (a)/1> Synthetic filaments are stretched or shrunk by means of coaxial, independently driven stretching rollers 2, 5 and transfer means constituted by a pulley 4 which measures and regulates the stretching or shrinkage tension. The rollers 2, 5 may be independently heated or cooled and may be rough, smooth, rubber-covered or of cage form for liquid treatment. The pulley 4 may be mounted on a pressure-measuring box or on a rod capable of deflecting under the tension in the filament, the pressure or amount of bending being used to control the speeds of rotation of the rollers 2, 5 directly, as by relays or continuously variable amplifiers, so as to maintain constant tension. The treatment of polyurethane filaments is mentioned. Specification 784,535 is referred to.
