Abstract

810,876. Welding by pressure. CROMPTON PARKINSON Ltd. July 30. 1957 [Aug. 10, 1956], No. 24608/56. Class 83 (4). A machine for welding studs to a tube along a helical path has a driving mechanism for intermittently rotating the tube and for intermittently moving a carriage along the tube and a stud welding head on the carriage which each time the tube and carriage come to rest welds a stud to the tube. A motor 3 intermittently rotates two tubes 1 and traverses the carriage 5 carrying a vibratory hopper 6 and two welding heads 8. Studs are fed from the hopper 6 down guides 7 and are pushed by cam-actuated members 19 between the water-cooled jaws 35, 36 of each welding head. One jaw 36 is carried by and spring loaded towards the other 35 which is clamped on to a dove-tail portion of the welding head. Each stud as it is pushed between the jaws engages a curved surface 25 to lift the jaws from the tube 1. Under control of a cam, welding current is connected up and solenoids retract the welding heads to strike the arcs. The studs are then welded to the tubes, the welding heads moving down tmtil an insulated pad 37 on the fixed jaw 27 engages the tube. Relative movement of the welding heads and tubes disengages the welded studs 41 from the jaws 35, 36. In a modification the moving jaw 36 is pivoted to the fixed jaw 35 and a weight on an arm fixed to the moving jaw supplies the clamping pressure to hold the stud.
