Abstract

358,608. Uniting by fusion. DORMAN, LONG, & CO., Ltd. and FREEMAN, F. R., 55, Broadway, Westminster. July 16, 1930, No. 21548. [Class 83 (iv).] In an arc welding apparatus of the kind in which the electrode is carried in a holder fed towards the work as consumed, each electrode is secured in its holder at such an angle to the direction of movement of the holder that the point of the electrode moves along the weld without relative longitudinal movement between the holder and work. In a multiple electrode apparatus a bar A carrying holders B for inclined electrodes C is fed by rotating screw-threaded rods E, the electrodes passing through guides G carried by a slide F which is traversed longitudinally by gear in synchronism with the feed gear. In a modification the electrodes may be guided by a slotted bar. The feed may be adjusted by varying the feed of the holders or the inclination of the electrodes and their distance apart may also be adjusted. For this purpose the holders may be pivoted to split blocks J clamped to the bar, and the guides adjustably fixed by T- headed bolts K in the slide F. The electrode guides may be operated by a cam worked from the same source of power to oscillate the electrodes laterally. A duplicate set of electrode holders B<1> and electrodes C<1> may be provided, the frame H being rotatable on trunnions I, so as to bring the second set of electrodes into position when the first set is consumed. In this case the electrodes may be oscillated laterally by rocking the apparatus on the trunnions, lateral clearance being provided between the electrodes and their guides. If the electrodes are bare, the guides may be made of refractory insulating material. Each electrode holder may be fitted into a solenoid controlled head so that each arc is controlled and struck by its own current.
