Abstract

810,472. Pipe couplings ; stopping pipes. TUNGUM CO. Ltd. May 19, 1955 [May 29, 1954], No. 15966/54. Class 99(1). In a flareless pipe coupling, an annular packing 22, of resilient material, projects into the bore 15 of a body part 12 to provide an interference fit between a pipe 10 and the packing and form a radial seal between the body and the pipe when the latter is inserted into the bore, a split annular member 24 having a smooth bore and a coned surface being engaged within a coned seating along which the member is forced so that, by screwing a nut 17 on to the body, the member is contracted to grip the pipe. As shown in Fig. 1, the body 12 has an axial bore 14 counterbored at each end to receive pipes 10, 11, and internal annular grooves 21 housing rubber sealing rings 22. Surrounding the pipes are longitudinally split, annular members 24 having inwardly tapering, coned ends 26 which cooperate with internal, coned surfaces 20 of nuts 17. The members 24 abut the annular faces 28 of the body, and the ends 10a, 11a of the pipes may contact shoulders 23. In modifications, (a) the members 24 are coned at each end and corresponding coned surfaces are formed in the counterbores 15 and the nuts, and (b) the coupling is adapted for pressure testing a pipe 41, Fig. 5, the body 33 at one end of the pipe having a spigot 35 bored at 37 and screwed into a manifold 38, the nut 44 being provided with a tommy bar 46, and the body 32a at the other end of the pipe forming a closure member.
