Abstract

In order to recover both sodium-silicate and sand from the debris of used foundry moulds and cores, the debris is heated to a temperature above 400 DEG C., or to about 100 DEG C. at a pressure above atmosphere of more than 0.1 kg. per sq. cm., to cause the hydrated-silica to combine with the alkali metal-carbonate to form a mixture of silicate and sand, and then the silicate is dissolved in water hydrothermically at a temperature above 100 DEG C. at a pressure of more than 0.1 kg. per sq. cm. above atmospheric. The solution may be effected in a solution of alkaline substances, e.g. alkaline hydroxides or alkali metal silicates, in the presence of water or steam, if the ratio of silicate in the sand as regenerated is too low for re-use. The regenerated mixture is suitable for use in the process described in Specification 654,817, [Group XXII].
