Abstract
660,604. Mould materials; moulding processes. MONSANTO CHEMICALS, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1949 [Dec. 13, 1948], No. 32149/48. Class 83 (i). In a method of preparing moulds in accordance with the investment casting process, the pattern before application of the investment is sprayed or otherwise coated with a solution of an organic or inorganic silicate in which a colloidal solution of silica has been incorporated. The mould may be cut away from the pattern in sections or the pattern may be of wax or other material which is removed by melting. The silicate used may be sodium silicate or ethyl silicate. The colloidal solution of silica may be aqueous or organic. The solution applied to the pattern may have powdered flint or other refractory filler mixed therewith. The investment may comprise a mixture of alumina, silica and magnesia bonded together by an aqueous alcoholic solution of ethyl silicate.
