Abstract

A conversion coating is produced on a metal surface by spraying, the spraying being performed at least twice and the duration of each spray application being controlled so that the total time between the first and last applications during which the surface is out of contact with the spray is greater than the total time during which the surface is in contact with the spray. Coatings may be produced using phosphate solutions; solutions containing aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic and hydroxycarboxylic acids, such as oxalic, malonic and tartaric acids; solutions containing aromatic sulphonic acids; and solutions containing chromates. In the two forms of apparatus described, (1) the articles are subjected to a spray which is fed intermittently with solution through a rotating-disc valve, and (2) the articles are moved through spaced spray-zones produced by a plurality of sprays.
