Abstract

A process for treating a metal surface comprises producing a zinc phosphate coating thereon by treating with a zinc phosphate solution containing at least 0.1 gr/1 of a simple fluoride calculated as F-, giving the resultant coating a chromate rinse and thereafter coating with paint by an electrophoretic method. The zinc phosphate solution may also contain a complex fluoride such as a flurosilicate, fluoroborate or fluorotitanate; the ratio of complex fluoride, calculated as SiF6 to simple fluoride, calculated as F-, is preferably 5:1. When the complex fluoride is not SiF6, the amount of complex fluoride is calculated on the basis of the fluorine present, i.e. 1 mole of SiF6 is equivalent to 1 1/2 mole of BF4. The fluoride and complex fluoride are preferably present as the sodium salt thereof or corresponding acid. The zinc phosphate solution may also contain more than 0.01% nickel. During electrolysis the surface to be painted may form the anode.
