Abstract

806,433. Type-printing telegraphy. GRIFFITH, R. G. July 5, 1955 [May 3, 1954], No. 12814/54. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XVI] In a type-printing telegraph apparatus in which a number of type members are carried by a type-carrier mounted on a carriage arranged to traverse by steps the printing platen, and in which a hammer also mounted on the carriage effects the printing operation by moving the selected type member relatively to the carrier and towards the platen, the hammer, carriage-stepping mechanism and a mechanism for positive registration and locking the typecarrier in its selected position are all operated by the angular movement of a single member having a sliding engagement with a'member moving in accordance with the movement of the carriage. The type-carrier 83 is mounted in a frame 82 mounted on a vertical shaft supported by a carriage 170 having rollers 171 running on guide-rails 172. The rotational movement of the carrier 83 is effected by a gear 72 meshing with a gear 73 on a splined shaft 74 carrying a spiral gear 76 engaging a spiral sector 78 on the vertical shaft 79 having a slot 85 engaged by a pin 84 on the frame 82. The vertical movement of the type-carrier 83 is effected by a link 96 engaging a pivoted lever 98 carrying a rod 100 engaging a pivoted forked lever 101 attached by a pin 103 to the frame 82. An operating bail 180 supported by an arm 182 is rocked by a.pivoted lever 181 having a forked portion 185 carrying rollers 186, 187 engaged by cams 188, 189 disposed at 90 degrees so that the lever 181 and bail 180 are rocked positively in both directions during half a revolution of an operating shaft 190. For the printing operation the bail 180 is rocked downwardly and an arm 196 rocks counterclockwise a cradle 195 mounted on a shaft 198 and carrying an extension 199 which rotates a pivoted lever 200 so that its end 202 pushes forward a member 203 provided with four spaces between five teeth 210 to engage a space between seventeen teeth 211 provided on a horizontal plate 212 to adjust and lock the position of the type-carrier. A finger 215 on the member 200 engages a lateral extension 216 on a pivoted latch member 217 so that the arm 221 of a printing frame 222 is unlatched and can rotate anticlockwise under the action of a spring 224 to move forward a hammer member 230 so that its end 234 urges the selected type against the carbon strip and paper carried by the platen 105. The member 203 carries a lug 240 associated with a horizontal extension 241 on a lever 242 pivoted at 243 to the frame 222 so that the latter cannot be rocked to effect the printing operation unless the sector 203 has been rotated to lock the type-carrier. On the return movement of the bail 180, an arm 250 on the cradle 195 through link 252 rocks the frame 222 clockwise so that the extension on the arm 221 is latched by the member 217. The downward movement of the cradle 195 engages the arm 254 of a pivoted lever so that its other arm 256 rocks a lever 258 pivoted at 259 so that its arm 260 presses a pawl 261 against a rack 175 to move the carriage a step to the right. The carriage is retained in position by a pawl 174 engaging with the rack. The positions of the pawls relative to the rack is determined by pins 264, 266 and the carriage is returned to the beginning of a line by lowering the rack 175 out of engagement with the pawls. A lever 270 having forked engagement with the bail 180 carries a roller 273 positioning the ribbon 274 fed from a first spool 275 and a pawl carried by a bent lever 276 steps a ratchet 278 on the axis of the spool 275 during the downward movement of the bail 180. A second lever similar to 270 carries a roller to position the ribbon relative to the platen 105 and type-carrier 83, and also a pawl arranged to effect the drive, in the opposite direction, of the second spool carrying the inking ribbon. Specifications 439,745, 441,090, [both in Group XL], 806,431 and 806,432 are referred to.
