Abstract

805,598. Rolling tubes. DELTA-KUHLSCHRANK G.m.b.H. May 16, 1956 [May 17, 1955; April 27, 1956], No. 15213/56. Class 83 (4). In a method of continuous cold rolling steel tubes down to diameters of 4-20 mm. a plurality of roller sets arranged in the direction of travel and staggered about the axis of the tube each engage only a restricted portion of the periphery and are driven at successively greater speeds to raise the material above its yield point between suceessive stages. Each roll pass may comprise a pair of rolls 11a, 11b, Fig. 7, having regions extending over an angle α of about 110 degrees which engage and reduce the thickness of the tube and having recessed regions 16 in which the tube can separate from the mandrel bar 15 and is free to stretch longitudinally with the rolled areas. In a modification the roll pass may comprise a group of three co-operating rolls 22, Fig. 8, engaging the tube 14 over an angle # of about 70 degrees. Each set of rolls 2, Fig. 2, is driven from an asynchronous motor 1 through a telescopic shaft 5 and bevel wheel couplings 4, 6 which drive a gearbox 8 having shafts 10s, 10b coupled to the individual rolls 11a, 11b. Backing rolls 12a, 12b, Fig. 5, hold the working rolls in position and are mounted at their ends in bearing housing 17a, 17b which are adjustable on screw spindles 18a, 18b to vary the pass. Every third roll pass and the final pass may be circular to give the tube the required circular form.
