A washing machine (particularly a dishwasher) comprises a fixed cabinet 3, Fig. 1, having a substantially horizontal top 46 fixed thereon or adapted to receive such a top, a washing tub 6 and associated washing apparatus (e.g. a timer 43, motor 8 for the shaft 9, Fig. 7, an impeller, drain and water inlet connections 11, 10, drain pumps 12 and motor 13 therefor), a lid 14 for the tub 6 and associated with the cabinet 3, sealing means 24 for the lid and means (links 15, springs 22, 25 and slotted members 27) actuated by the movement of the tub to move the lid to and from sealing relationship with the tub, the construction and arrangement being such that when the tub is pushed home under the top 46 the lid 14 will automatically move into sealing relationship with the tub 6 and when the tub is actuated to withdraw it from under the cabinet top the lid will be moved away from sealing relationship with the tub to allow withdrawal of the tub. Four links 15, i.e. a pair of links at each side of the machine are provided, the front links 15 being pivoted at 17 on brackets 18 adjustably mounted on the cabinet and pivoted by pins 16 to the lid 14. A tension spring 22 is connected to each front pin 16 and to a side of the cabinet. The rear links 15 are likewise pivoted at 17 to rear brackets 18 and by pins 16 to the lid 14. However a tension spring 25 is connected at one end to a side of the cabinet and at the other end to a member 27, Fig. 6, having a slot 28 engaging the associated pin 16, the rearward end of the member 27 having a projection 29 engageable by a member 30 on the tub 6. The springs 25 which are stronger than the springs 22 urge the lid 14 upwardly by the rear ends of the slots 28 engaging the rear pins 16 whilst the springs 22 urge the lid 14 downwardly. When the tub is slid under the cabinet the member 30 engages the projection 29 and thus disengages the end of the slot 28 from the associated pin 16 whereafter the associated spring 25 is rendered ineffective so that springs 22 can move the lid to its tubsealing position. Similarly when the tub is initially moved outwardly of the cabinet, the member 30 is disengaged from the member 27, whereafter the slot end engages the pin 16 so that the spring 25 can lift the lid against the action of the associated spring 22. The tub and washing mechanism are supported by a frame 7 slidable on rollers working on guides 7a in known manner. The frame 7 also carries a disc 35 Fig. 7, connected by pins 34 to bolts 32 slidable under the urge of springs 32c to engage keepers (not shown) in the cabinet sides, the disc being rotatable by a handle 44, Fig. 1. The disc is also connected at 42 to a rod 41 for actuating the timer 43, Fig. 1, the latter being provided with a manual reset shaft 45, Fig. 7. The water supply and drain connections are by flexible hoses 10, 11. An electric switch at the back of the cabinet is operable by its counterpart on the tub when the tub is in the fully home position in the cabinet whereby the machine can only be operated when the tub is fully home.
