Abstract
Polyolefines produced, e.g. from ethylene, propylene or butylene, by the low pressure process are purified (residual catalyst destroyed) by treatment with an aqueous solution of a complex-forming organic carboxylic acid, which may be subsequently removed by washing with water. By the low-pressure process is meant the use of catalysts formed by mixing a compound of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal with aluminium, an alkali metal, aluminium hydride, or an organic compound of aluminium, magnesium, zinc or an alkali metal, and in examples titanium tetrachloride is mixed with diethyl aluminium chloride in the presence of butane or cyclohexane and ethylene continuously introduced therein. Carboxylic acids specified are oxalic, glycollic, lactic and tartaric acids and potassium tetraoxalate. Optional features disclosed are pretreatment of the polymer with an anhydrous alcohol, and the preferred inclusion during purification of a wetting agent, such as an ethylene oxide/fatty alcohol condensate, an alkyl aryl sulphonate, or, in particular, a phosphoric acid ester of which many are listed.
