Abstract

803,893. Velocity modulated tubes. EITELMcCULLOUGH, Inc. Aug. 2, 1955 [March 18, 1955], No. 22149/55. Class 39(1). A klystron has a metal drift tube formed in at least two sections separated by a gap bridged by a cavity resonator formed as a rectangular box, an insulating (ceramic) cylinder within and sealed to the resonator to maintain the vacuum two conductive rectangular tuning plungers located in the resonator outside the cylinder on opposite sides thereof and movable slidingly towards and away from the tube axis the drift tubes and resonator being permanently and rigidly secured together to form a single rigid body unit. There may be three resonators all constructed mounted and tuned in the same way, as shown. Members 39 may be discs made separately and fastened to the drift tube section or may be integrally formed with the drift tube sections (drawing shows both forms). Similarly 42 can be brazed to or integral with 39. Metal "webs", Fig. 2 (not shown), define together with discs 42 cavity resonators of rectangular cross section. Tuning plungers 51 with flexible fingers 52 are actuated by screws 53. The gun and collector units are made separately as sub-assemblies and then welded to the main body portion of the tube at 49. To ensure centering members 8 and 31 have plug extensions fitting into sockets in the end drift tube sections. The gun comprises indirectly heated cathode 18, focusing cylinder 21 and copper anode 7, having terminals 16, 14, 13 and the outer part of 7 respectively, sealed to or through three ceramic cylinders 10, 11, 12. Focusing magnets (not shown) are placed around tube 8. The cup shaped collector 27 has cooler 28 and exhaust pipe 29 and has a ceramic cylinder 34 to insulate it from the drift tubes and resonators. The joints between the ceramic cylinders and metal parts are made via thin metal sealing flanges and the joints between metal parts are made by brazing.
