Abstract

803,111. Rotary cultivators, grass cutting machines. SHAY, Ltd., J. E., and WRIGHT, E. J. July 29, 1955 [July 29, 1954], No. 22214/54. Classes 6(1) and 6(3). [Also in Group XXXI] . A rotary cultivator comprises a transverse cultivator shaft 19 to carry tines or blades 46 which projects from both sides of a bracket 13 which carries a vertical driving spindle 14, the bracket depending from a platform 12 which supports an engine 25 and a rigidly attached handle 33. The spindle 14 drives the shaft 19 by means of worm gearing and is itself driven by the engine by means of belt and pulley gearing 27, a jockey pulley 30 controlled from the handle acts as a clutch control. Ground wheels 42 are mounted on an axle 40 which is adjustably clamped in a flange 16 at the rear of the platform by means of a clamping plate 43 and bolts 44, 45. The shaft 19 is hollow and may be fitted on either side with an extension shaft carrying further tines to extend the width of cultivation. The wheels 42 and axle 40 may be replaced by a ridging plough carried by a vertical rod clamped between the flange 16 and plate 43. The tines may be removed from the shaft 19 and replaced with wheels driven by the shaft 19 and in this form the machine is provided with hoes mounted on a cross-bar supported by a vertical rod from the flange 16 and clamping plate 43. With the tines removed and the wheels 42 and axle 40 in position the machine may be used as a grass-cutter by attaching a cross-bar comprising fixed and reciprocating cutters driven from the lower end of the vertical spindle 14. To form a rotary grass cutter a scythe arm is mounted on the end of the vertical spindle, the arm carrying cutter discs at the tips thereof. A horizontal plate is carried above the cutter and between the wheels 42 and a pair of idler wheels mounted at the front of the machine. Specification 570,755 is referred to.
