Abstract

An acid-activated montmorillonite clay, e.g. fuller's earth, suitable for use as a catalyst or bleaching earth is produced by mixing the clay with an acid, e.g. sulphuric acid, in the presence of water, extruding the mixture and forming pellets or nodules thereof, heating to activate whilst preventing loss of water and removing acid, water-soluble salts and water. The clay may be thus treated after drying and grinding to a powder containing 2-15 per cent of water or as mined. Activation may take place at 60-125 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure in a water-saturated atmosphere for 1-32 hours or may be carried out under pressure: the pellets may be passed downwardly through a heated tower or through a continuous oven. The acid and salts may be removed by leaching the pellets with water with or without previous grinding. The methods of Specifications 688,976 or 632,535 may be used after leaching to dry the product; the method of Specification 696,943 may be used to remove water, acids and salts; the wash water should not be above 80 DEG C. and the operation may be performed countercurrently. The resultant pellets (or the product of dewatering a slurry) may then be passed to a rotary kiln to reduce the water content to e.g. 0.1 per cent. Alternatively the moist activated pellets may be ground with water or a water-miscible solvent and spray- or film-dried. In the examples a calcium montmorillonite and fuller's earth are employed.
