Classes 39(3) and 126 A heating appliance comprises an annular surface heater for a vessel, a support having a movable upper portion and a fixed lower part and a temperature sensitive element for contacting a vessel, the element being supported centrally of the surface heater in one end of the upper portion and resilient means between the upper and lower parts to bias the upper part and the element upwardly. A temperature sensitive device comprising a circular capsule 34 containing a suitable fluid is mounted in the upper end of a tubular shield 52 within an annular electric heater 14. The shield 52 is slidably mounted on a sleeve 54 carried by a plate 68 releasably secured within an annular plate 74 supported by straps 70 from the flange 18 supporting the heating element 14. Abutment plates 78 below the plate 74 pass through notches 80 on plate 68, and cam surfaces 82 engage projections 84 to hold the plate in its assembled position. A spring 60 between a flange 62 at the upper end of the sleeve 54 and a flange 50 within the upper end of shield 52 holds the shield 52 with its top flange 48 just above the surface of the heater 14. The temperature sensitive capsule 34 is supported between the flanges 48, 50 at the top of the shield 52, and is normally pressed against the top flange 48 by the resilience of the coiled capillary tube 64 which connects the capsule 34 with the thermostatic control 26 in the electricity supply line. When a cooking vessel is used on the heater, the capsule 34 is in contact with the vessel but out of contact with the shield 52 so that the operation of the thermostat depends only on the temperature of the vessel. When no vessel is on the heater the capsule 34 contacts the flange 48 so that overheating is reduced. The construction of the capsule is described in Specification 800,775 [Group XIII].
