Abstract

799,212. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 3, 1956 [Dec. 3, 1955], No. 34692/55. Class 39(4). Cooling gas is circulated through the core 11 of a reactor and through a heat exchanger 13 by a compressor 14, driven by a gas turbine 12 in the flow of coolant gas, all within the reactor pressure vessel 7 and shield 6. Helium at a pressure of 10 atmospheres may be used to cool a solid fuel reactor, alternatively the reactor may have a gaseous fuel. The turbine-compressor unit may comprise a pair of close coupled discs or a single bladed disc with blade roots acting as the turbine and blade tips as the compressor. The unit is started by electric, hydraulic or pneumatic starter. An inspection door 9 provides access to the unit and enables it to be removed for maintenance. The secondary circuit of the heat exchanger may be coupled to an open or closed circuit gas turbine or to a steam cycle.
