Abstract

A ceramic surface is metallized by coating with a mixture of one or more powdered oxides of manganese and one or more powdered metals selected from iron, nickel, tungsten and molybdenum, and then sintering. Specifically, the ceramic body, e.g. a forsterite component of a transmitting valve, is coated as by brushing or spraying with a mixture of the powders in a liquid carrier, e.g. diacetone alcohol containing a binding agent such as nitrocellulose, and then sintered in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen at a temperature of 1300 DEG C. To facilitate brazing to another body, the metallized ceramic may be electroplated with nickel and heat-treated in hydrogen at 1000 DEG C. to strengthen the plating.
