In a cylindrical roller bearing, the outer race comprises an annular member having radial recesses 8, 9 arranged alternately along its outer and inner peripheries whereby the application of axial force, by rotation of the screwed ring 5, increases the radial thickness of the race thereby reducing the clearance in the bearing. Outer parts 12 engage the bore of the housing 1 and inner parts 13 form the raceways for rollers 7. The race is provided at each end with inwardly directed flanges 11. Alternatively, or additionally, the inner race may be formed as an elastic member. Specifications 359,373, U.S.A. Specification 1,912,023 and German Specification 509,315 are referred to.
