Abstract
797,546. Making socket head screws. CONSTABLE, A. Aug. 20, 1956 [Aug. 20, 1955], No. 24043/55. Class 83 (4). A socket head type screw, Fig. 3 (not shown), is made by cold-extruding a metal blank whose maximum outer periphery corresponds to the outer periphery of the head of the screw, to form the head and shank of the screw, and simultaneously punching the socket in the head, the metal displaced during the punching being extruded into the shank to effect a lengthening thereof. For producing a countersunk head screw, a cylindrical blank, Fig. 2 (not shown), is inserted in a die cavity 5 and is extruded therefrom into cavities 7, 8 by a punch 9 carried by a main slide 13. An auxiliary punch 10 moves initially with the punch 9 and at a certain point in the stroke the auxiliary punch is moved forwardly of the punch 9 to form the socket. The auxiliary punch is carried by an auxiliary slide 14 actuated through a lever 11 by a cam 15. Alternatively the auxiliary slide 14 may be actuated by a bell-crank lever pivoted on the main slide 13 and adapted to engage an inclined block mounted adjacent the main slide. Cheese head screws are produced in two stages, the socket being punched in the final stage.
