Abstract
492,590. Making ammunition shells. STEWART & CO., Ltd., D., CROSBIE, J. B. TALBOT-, and MACQUISTEN, A. P. S. Feb. 22, 1937, No. 5187. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Billet - piercing ; squirting.-In the manufacture of ammunition shells with a closed end, the billet 6, Fig. 1, is arranged in the die with the direction of the grain (indicated by the dotted line 9) not collinear with the direction of movement of the punch 7. Thereupon movement of the punch forges the billet to the form shown in Fig. 3 with the direction of the grain indicated at 9<1>. An extrusion process lengthens the wall of the case while maintaining the grain parallel thereto, the closed bottom having a grain transverse to the wall direction. The operation is otherwise substantially the same as described in Specification 469,550.
