Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:0797316/IV (b)/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl radicals or may together form part of a ring structure, R is <FORM:0797316/IV (b)/2> where R4 and R5 are hydrocarbon radicals, R3 is an alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl radical, and R1, R2 and R3 may contain halogen radicals, are prepared by the reaction of a -chloro or a -bromo esters with alkali metal salts of dithiocarbamic acids. Compounds specified are ethyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl (di-isopropyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, isopropyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, isopropyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, isobutyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, 2-ethylhexyl (cyclopentamethylene dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl-a -(dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) isobutyrate, phenyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate and b -chloroethyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate. In the Example, n-butyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate is prepared by adding to a solution of n-butyl monochloracetate in alcohol an aqueous alcoholic solution of sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate, and filtering off the crystallized product. The preparation of b -chloroethyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate from b -chloroethyl monochloracetate and sodium di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate is also referred to.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a compound of formula: <FORM:0797316/III/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl radicals or may together form part of a ring structure R is: <FORM:0797316/III/2> where R4 and R5 are hydrocarbon radicals and R3 is an alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl radical. R1, R2 and R3 may contain halogen radicals. Compounds specified are ethyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl (di-isopropyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, isopropyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, isopropyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, isobutyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate, 2-ethylhexyl (cyclopentamethylene dithiocarbamyl) acetate, n-butyl a (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) isobutyrate, phenyl (di - n - butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate and b chlorethyl (di - n - butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate. The compositions may also contain antioxidants such as alkylated phenols, e.g. tert. butyl cresol, 2,4-dimethyl-6-tertiary butyl phenol and 2,6-di-tert. butyl-p-cresol; antirusting additives such as acid esters of the long chain mono-esters of polyhydric alcohols described in Specification 643,025; copper-staining inhibitors such as a mercapto-arylene thiazole, e.g. 2 mercapto-benzothiazole or benzothiazole disulphide, an alkyl thiuram disulphide, or any other additive or additives of the type described in Specification 767,734, e.g. zinc di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate; alkylated succinic acid as a corrosion inhibitor; organic halogenated compounds, e.g. chlorinated paraffin wax; and calcium petroleum sulphonate. The compositions are compared with those containing S-nhexyl di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate or dibenzyl disulphide.
