Abstract

796,917. Drying gases. CALUMET & HECLA, Inc. Oct. 9, 1956 [Jan. 16, 1956], No. 30761/56. Class 34(1) A drier for use in refrigerating apparatus comprises a copper or aluminium tubular casing 10, Fig. 1, having inlet and outlet openings 12, 14, and packed with silica gel 16 between baffle plate and screen assemblies 18. Each assembly comprises a thermoplastic, e.g. nylon, plate 20 and a mesh screen 22, Fig. 4. The plate and screen are so shaped that a flange integral with the screen is located within a channel 28 formed in the plate. When fitted in the casing 10 the plate 20 is heatbonded thereto. The plate has holes 36 and is shaped to form a space between it and the screen. In a modified plate and screen assembly, Fig. 5, the flanged edge portion of the plate is shaped such that a space 68 is formed on construction of the assembly. In assembly the gel 16 and the baffle plate and screen assemblies are placed in the casing 10 before the ends are reduced to provide the openings 12, 14. A spinning operation effects such reduction by relatively rotating a die 40 and the casing about the axis of the die whilst moving the casing into the die. The heat generated by the spinning may be used to heat-bond plates 20 to the casing.
