Class 44 In a supporting base for a measuring or like device consisting of a stand base, the latter is provided with a stepped recess on the underside thereof in which a membrane is arranged which is of less depth than the recess so that the stand base may be supported on a flat surface and which membrane is retractable and can be held in the retracted position. In the arrangement shown, a stand base 1 is adapted to be releasably secured to a supporting surface 12, by means of a sealing ring 10 and an elastic membrane 6 which is secured by screws 8 over a recess 4 which is movable by means of a rod 14 to create a partial vacuum between the membrane and the surface 12. The rod 14 is held in its raised position by a manually operable bolt 20 which engages a peg 17 on the rod. In another arrangement, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the sealing ring 10 is dispensed with and the edge of the membrane 6 is free to contact the surface 12 when the rod 14 is raised. In a similar arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the membrane 6 is formed with an upstanding flange which engages the wall of the recess 4. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown). the rod 14 is adjustably connected to the membrane 6.
