Abstract
A process for the manufacture of oximes comprises reducing alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of nitro-cycloparaffins by means of an aqueous solution of sulphur and alkali. The term "alkali" is defined as meaning the hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates of the alkali metals or oxides or hydroxides of alkaline earth metals and the reducing agent is prepared by dissolving sulphur in boiling aqueous alkali or by heating anhydrous alkali with sulphur and dissolving the product in water. The alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of the nitrocycloparaffin may be added to an aqueous mineral acid and the pH of the mixture maintained below 4 by further addition of acid. In examples: cyclohexanone oxime is obtained by reducing nitrocyclohexane dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution with products obtained by boiling sulphur with aqueous sodium hydroxide (1) and (2); and by boiling with water the reaction mixture obtained by heating calcium oxide and sulphur (3), hydrochloric acid being added during the reduction.
