Abstract

796,137. Making spring wheels. KLOCKNER-GEORGSMARIENWERKE AKT.-GES. July 31, 1956 [April 5, 1956], No. 23661/56. Addition to 791,371. Class 144 (1). The wheel of the parent Specification is made by pouring the polyurethane or like plastic, in a liquid state, between the previously cleaned metal surfaces of the rim 5 and wheel body discs 2, 3 to which the plastic rings 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are to be bonded, the liquid plastic being retained therebetween and the assembly then heat-treated to set the plastic and thereby form the rings 4, 41. As shown, the rim 5 and one of the discs, 2, are concentrically located in recesses 13 on a horizontal plate 11 having a surface 14 to define the sloping outer surface of the uncompressed plastic ring 4. The surfaces 16, 17 of the rim 5 and disc 2 are sandblasted and treated with an isocyanate solution to enhance the bond with the polyurethane, which is poured from a ladle 19 into the space defined by the surfaces 14, 16 and 17. The surface 14 is treated with a fatty medium to prevent adhesion with the polyurethane, and dowel pins 15 through the rim lugs 6, the aligned holes 2a in the disc 2, and aligned holes in the plate 11 prevent relative displacement of the assembly parts. The assembly, forming a mould, is preheated in an oven before pouring of the polyurethane, the whole being returned to the oven until the desired set is obtained. Next the second body disc 3, Fig. 5, is located on the plate 11, and the rim 5, with the disc 2 bonded thereto by the ring 4, is reversed and centred around the disc 3 on the plate 11. The discs 2, 3 are bolted together with a spacer 21 therebetween, the thickness of which determines the degree of precompression of the plastic rings 4, 41 on final dowelling together of the discs 2, 3. The disc 3 is located with the plate 11 by dowels 20, and pouring of the polyurethane is effected through'a funnel 23 inserted through the aligned holes in the disc 2 and the rim lug 6. After heat-setting of the ring 4<SP>1</SP>, the plate 11 and spacer 21 are removed and the wheel discs 2, 3 assembled together and with the wheel hub.
